About Verified by Visa

Q: What is Verified by Visa?

Verified by Visa is a free service from Visa and the Cumberland Building Society that provides greater peace of mind when you shop online at VbV participating retailers by providing added protection against unauthorised use of your registered card. It also protects your card against unauthorised use online, even if you do not personally shop online. Top

Q: How does Verified by Visa work?

Once you've registered and created a Password, each time you make an online purchase, you will be asked for your Password, just like using a PIN at the ATM. When you correctly enter your Password, the Cumberland Building Society confirms that you are the authorised cardholder and your purchase is completed. No code, no confirmation, no purchase. Top

Q: Is Verified by Visa easy to use?

Yes. When you make an online purchase at VbV participating retailers, a window from the Cumberland Building Society will prompt you for your Password. After reviewing the details of your purchase and confirming that your Personal Message is correct, simply enter your Password to complete your purchase. Top

Q: What are the system requirements for Verified by Visa?

Verified by Visa requires the use of Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.0 and above, Netscape Navigator 4.0 and above, or America Online 4.0 and above. Top

Q: Can I use Verified by Visa from any computer?

Because there's no special software to install, you can shop from any computer meeting the system requirements outlined above and still receive the added protection afforded by Verified by Visa. However, we strongly recommend that you do not use public computers for online shopping, such as those found in hotel foyers, internet cafes and libraries.Top

Q: What happens when my debit card expires?

The Cumberland Building Society will automatically update this information in your profile. You do not need to re-register in order to continue using VbV unless the card number has changed. Top

Q: What happens if I cancel or lose my existing card then get a new one with a different card number?

You will need to register the new card for Verified by Visa. Simply return to the registration site, and complete the registration process with your new card. Top

Registering for Verified by Visa

Q: What is registration and how do I register?

You need to register your Visa debit card for VbV using either the registration site or when prompted to do so whilst shopping at a VbV participating retailer. During registration you set up a Password and Personal Message. You also need to review and accept the VbV Terms of Service. Top

Q: What cards can I register with Verified by Visa?

You can register any of your existing Visa, credit or debit cards as long as they are issued by a participating issuer. To check which card issuers are participating go to the Visa website. Top

Q: How many cards can I register with Verified by Visa?

We encourage you to register all of your Visa cards. There is no limit to how many cards you can register. Top

Q: Why do I have to supply personal information during registration?

The information you provide is checked against the information that the Cumberland Building Society has on file. This is done as a security precaution to be sure that the person registering is the real cardholder. For further security, we also ask for the three digit security code on the reverse of the card, to be sure you have physical possession of the card that is being registered. Top

Q: Why do I have to enter all of my personal information again when I register a second Cumberland card?

All of the information you provide is checked against the information that the Cumberland Building Society has on file. You are asked to enter the information again when you register a second card for your own protection. That way, the Cumberland Building Society can be sure the real cardholder is registering the card. Top

Q: If the Cumberland account is a joint account, how do I enroll?

Verified by Visa protects each card. Each cardholder on a joint account must enroll their card and select different passwords. Top

Q: Can I create the same Password for all of my cards?

Yes, however we recommend each Visa card has its own Password so it is protected individually. We recommend that you select a Password that will be easy for you to remember, but difficult for others to guess. The Password must be between 6 and 10 characters in length and contain at least one number. Top

Q: What is a Personal Message?

The Personal Message is a message that you create during registration at the registration site. It must be different to your Password. Once you've completed your registration, each time you make an online purchase, you will be asked to enter your Password. In this window, you'll see your Personal Message. The Personal Message is your assurance that you are communicating with, and submitting your Password to, the Cumberland Building Society. If the Personal Message displayed in the window is incorrect or if no Personal Message is displayed, you should not enter your Password, but should instead contact Customer Service immediately by telephoning 0845 601 8396 (8.00am - 8.00pm Monday to Friday and 8.30am - 12.30pm Saturday). Top

Q: What is the three digit security code (CVV)?

The three digit security code is the last three digits that appear on the back of your card, on the signature panel. We ask for this information as an extra security feature to be sure that you have physical possession of the card being registered. Top

Q: What do I do if I have questions during the registration process?

The registration process is very straightforward. If you have questions, or need assistance during the registration process, you should contact Customer Service by telephoning 0845 601 8396 (8.00am - 8.00pm Monday to Friday and 8.30am - 12.30pm Saturday). Top

Security and Privacy

Q: How does Verified by Visa protect me?

Once you've registered and created a Password, each time you make an online purchase, you will be asked for your Password, like using a PIN at the ATM. When you correctly enter your Password, you confirm that you are the authorised cardholder and your purchase is completed. If the correct code is not supplied, the Cumberland Building Society cannot confirm your identity and the purchase will not be completed. No code, no confirmation, no purchase. It is important that you keep your VbV password safe and secure. Do not disclose your password to anyone else, as you will normally be held liable for any transactions authorised using your VbV password. If you do not shop online registering for VbV will increase the protection of your card from unauthorised use online. Top

Q: Does the service use cookies?

No. The Verified by Visa service does not use cookies that are stored on your desktop. Instead, the software uses "session cookies" which are temporarily stored on your desktop and immediately (and automatically) deleted when you go offline. Top
