Over 1,000 people came together on 16th April 1850 to form the Cumberland Co-operative Land and Benefit Building Society.
At the time, the main objective was to provide a means whereby the ‘industrious classes’ could acquire property. Throughout our entire history, we have operated using the same business model.
With 34 branches mainly in Cumbria and Dumfriesshire, but extending to Lancaster and Preston in North Lancashire and Haltwhistle in Northumberland. Today, our aim is to be the natural choice for mortgages and a leading provider for other retail financial services in our area.
The Cumberland can continue to operate as a successful, independent regional building society and demonstrate the tangible benefits of mutuality through the savings and mortgage products we offer.
To achieve this aim, we continue to provide the long term benefits from the range and quality of services that our members. This is achieved by the Society remaining modern, independent and mutual.
Your eligible deposits with Cumberland Building Society are protected up to a total of £85,000 by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, the UK's deposit protection scheme. Any deposits you hold above the £85,000 limit are not covered.
